Arts In Your Neighbourhood 

Arts in Your Neighbourhood (AYN) programme is one of the various initiatives by The National Arts Council, with the intent of introducing art programmes that engages neighbourhoods island wide. This initiative along with Arts and Culture Nodes, and ArtReach are all part Arts for All. Arts for All seeks to bring the arts to places where people live, play and work, encouraging the use of creativity and self-expression all while bonding through the different of activities being offered.

Despite living in different communities and neighbourhoods, many do not realise how arts are part of our lives. AYN targets and encourages Singaporeans coming from different backgrounds to come together and explore this aspect through the form of art experiences located right within the neighbourhood they live, adding excitement to daily activities of Singaporeans.
Art can be easily integrated into the neighbourhood

For the year of 2018, AYN is focused onto the town of Woodlands. With the selection of Woodlands as this year’s anchor for AYN, it taps on Woodlands being the connecting town between Johor Bahru and Singapore. Through this idea, AYN explores the meaning of home, moving to different ‘homes’, and what the term ‘home’ means for humanity being a lot more than just a place we reside. It is through this central theme where many of this year’s artwork and activities draw inspiration from.

Throughout the month of November, there are various programme and installations situated both within the neighbourhood of Woodlands and rest of Singapore. Within Woodlands, 5 public visual artworks specially curated by multiple artists which explores home movement within Woodlands, will be available. Theatre performances such as ‘The Rubbish Prince’ will be performing at multiple neighbourhood locations over several dates. Several music and dance performances such as ‘The Four Flavours of Life’ will also be taking place in the east. Such a huge variety of performances show the variety of art forms being presented through AYN, which is beneficial as Singaporeans will then be able to experience these different art forms rather than just focusing on musical performances per se. In addition to visual art and performances, a touch of engagement come in the form of ‘Woodlands Memory Capsules’. These capsules are reminiscence toy capsules many of us have when we were younger. This time around, these memory capsules will each contain a small item that celebrates a certain aspect or area within Woodlands.

Role of The Government

Role of The Government Over the years, National Arts Council (NAC) has provided support for the sports and arts industry in Singapore through many ways. This support is seen through 3 main areas. First being championing the industry, NAC takes on a personal approach. A thorough study was conducted based on different demographical groups, and by understanding the target, NAC can make arts relevant to their lives by appealing to their concerns and communicating with them through channels that the demographic uses. In relation to advocacy and support for the industry, NAC encourages individuals and corporate organisations to volunteer for the arts through their many different activities. Community

Arts and the Community Community arts has since risen to the center of attention as they are known more than just being a lesser version of what you see in grand theatres and expensive exhibitions. What these community arts and its events bring to the community relates further than just being attractive to the human eye. One of such benefits is the engagement with the community. An example is ‘Jumbo Fabrica’, one of the programmes offered through AYN. ‘Jumbo Fabrica’ is an engaging walking trail which requires participants to learn about stories through audio guides and also take part in upcycling stations where they will transform an old furniture into something fresh and rejuvenated. This engagement also comes in the form of artists acknowledging the community they are working in and finding creative spaces within it.
